Lionel Algernon's Story.
Lionel Algernon Bayley was born in Mobberley, Cheshire in 1893, one of eleven children born to Frederick William (a railway platelayer) and Elisabeth Bayley of Station Cottages, Mobberley.
On leaving school Lionel became a Nurseryman clerk
His service records still exists – and we see he attested on the 3rd September 1914 at Knutsford, becoming Private no. 15890 of the 10th Battalion of the Cheshire Regiment. He was called up in 1915.
Following his training, and on arriving in France on the 8th March 1915 he was transferred to the 17th Manchester Regiment becoming Private no. 9510.
He was wounded in action around Montauban on the 1-2 July 1916 – the notation stating it was a ‘slight wound’.
He was admitted to the 45th Casualty Clearing Station on the 3rd July suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg – it is unclear if this is the same wound he received the day before.
He died of wounds on the 4th July 1916.
