SCOTS GUARDSMAN KILLED.
On Saturday we recorded the death in action of Pte. Percy R. Anderton, aged 23, a member of the 1st Scots Guards. He enlisted soon after the war broke out, and left for the trenches on easter Tuesday. He had taken part in some very heavy engagements, notable in the recent advance by the enemy. Two letters have been received from his chums, who state that he was killed instantaneously on Sept. 27th by a bullet which entered his head. The deceased was an adopted son of Mrs. Hurley, 67, the Woodlands, Birkenhead, who was formerly Mrs. Lancaster of 12, Circular Road. Prior to enlisting Private Anderton was employed by Messrs. Bernard’s, Hamilton Street, for two or three years, and as a token of respect the Union Jack was flown half-mast over the premises when news was received of his death.
