Birkenhead News  09 December 1916

Gallant Dublin Fusilier.

Well-known Tranmere Man Killed.

News has come to hand of the death in action of Lance-Corporal A. E. Swan, of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. F. Swan, late of Higher Tranmere, and eldest grandson of the late Joseph Swan, who was so well known in the Higher Tranmere district. Lance-Corpl. Swan was a married man, 32 years of age, and in pre-war days was employed by Messrs. Lever Bros., Port Sunlight. He joined the colours upon the outbreak of war, and received his fatal wounds on October 23rd. A chum of Lance-Corpl. Swan wrote to Mrs. Swan to say that he found his friend and buried him reverently and erected a small wooden cross over the grave in spite of heavy shell fire.

Mr. and Mrs. Swan have two other sons who are each doing their bit in the war – Private A. Swan, who is with the Australian contingent, and G. R. Swan, who is serving on board one of H.M. transports.
