William's Story.
William Hammond was born in 1885 and was the husband of Sarah and together they had two children. They lived at 12, Middle Walk, Cross Town, Knutsford. He was a cooper by trade and was a very proficient ambulance man too.
He was one of the first in the town to volunteer to fight.
His service record no longer exists but we know he enlisted in 1914 and joined the 2nd Battalion of the Cheshire Regiment as Private no. 11982.
He went to France on the 6th March 1915.
He was killed in action on the 7th May 1915.

The war diary states:
7.5.15 VERLORENHOEK
At 11pm no. 1 & 4 Coy took over the section of firing line held by the 15th batt Welsh regiment and no. 2 & 3 Coy occupying support trenches.
6 OR killed 7 wounded.'
