HERBERT HAND 

Herbert Hand (listed in his newspaper obituary as Lance Corporal) died on 24th August 1916. He was 23. Serving with the Royal Engineers, he had previously been in the Royal Sussex Regiment, 7th Btn.

Herbert was born in the summer of 1895 to unmarried Frances (Fanny) Hand, aged 17. He was baptised in the church of St James the Great, Audlem on 7th March 1896.

Fanny married Henry Peake in 1899 and went on to have two more sons, but Herbert was brought up by his grandparents George and Mary Hand in Audlem.

Herbert joined the Royal Sussex Regiment 7th Btn, but at the time of his death was attached to the Royal Engineers. He was killed in action, hit by shrapnel, and is buried in Vermelles British Cememetry, Département du Pas-de-Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France.

Lance Corporal Herbert Hand is remembered on the war memorial in Audlem, and also named on a plaque inside the church of St James the Great, where he had been baptised.
