Birkenhead News  27 April 1918

KILLED BY SHELL FROM AIRCRAFT

Sad news has been received of the death of Sergt. A. J. Williams, of the A.S.C. who was killed by enemy air shell while engaged on important gun work. The deceased was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Williams of Swansea, and was previously employed by Messrs. Cammell Laird and Co. Much sympathy is extended towards his young wife, who resides with her parents at 5, Hind Street, Birkenhead. The following letter was received from his Major :- “Dear Mrs. Williams, - I have to inform you of the death of your husband Sergt. Williams. He was at the time engaged in important work in connection with a gun movement. It may be of some little comfort to you to know his end was speedy; an enemy shell burst immediately under him, inflicting such severe injuries that he succumbed in the course of a few minutes. We can ill afford to lose the services of such a fine, trustworthy soldier, and we, his comrades, know how such a personality will be missed by those who were dearest to him. – Sincerely yours, Jack Lacom, Major.”
