Sad Loss to Childer Thornton Family

The sad news has been forwarded by the War Office to Mrs Mealor that her eldest son, Pte. H Mealor, was killed in action on August 31st. He joined up in February 1915, and after training at Prees Heath was drafted out to France, where he was severely gassed, necessitating six months in England. He went across again in January this year. Prior to enlistment he was employed by Mr. W. A. Read, Briarfield as a gardener. He cheerfully took up the burden of helping his widowed mother to rear a family of young children, being her main supporter. His death is greatly deplored in the district, and much sympathy is felt for his mother and family.
