Hugh Stephen's Story.
Birkenhead News 17 November 1917YOUNG HESWALL SOLDIER KILLED.
Mr. Davies, West-grove, Heswall, received word on Wednesday from the Home Office that his son, Rifleman Hugh Davies, of the 2nd Battalion 6th King’s (Liverpool) Regiment, was killed by shell fire in the first week of October whilst fighting in France. Rifleman H. Davies, who was 23 years of age, joined the Army in September, 1914, and proceeded to France in February of this year. When a boy he attended the Church School, and Mr. Shaw, the master, has sent to the parents of the deceased a kindly letter of sympathy in their loss. He was highly respected, being of cheerful disposition and full of life. Six of his comrades in France have written letter of appreciation and sincere sympathy to the family in their loss. Second-Lieut. Harper writes that deceased was in a part of the line where the fighting has been very heavy. He was at his post when a shell dropped by him and killed him and two of his comrades. Before he was killed he helped to carry a lot of wounded men to safety. Sincere sympathy is extended to Mr. Davies and family in their loss by the residents of Heswall.
Although the above article reports Hugh Davies’ death as happening in the first week of October it actually occurred on the 30th October 1917.
