Yet another Higher Bebington hero has fallen for his country’s sake in Private James Henry Corfe, of the 3rd Battalion, Cheshire Regiment, but transferred to the 6th Battalion on the 14th June. Private Corfe had only been in the Army five months altogether, and was only in France a very brief period when he was killed on the 30th October by the bursting of the shell. Private Corfe’s widow resides at 7, Victoria Road, Higher Bebington, and he also leaves behind to mourn his loss six young children. Private Corfe had practically lived in Higher Bebington all his life, the Corfe family being one of the most respected families in the district. His father kept the Royal Oak Inn for a number of years, while very close relations farmed Heath Farm. Great sympathy is felt in Higher Bebington for the family. Previous to joining the Army Pte. Corfe had been employed at L.M. Bulley and Sons, cotton brokers, Liverpool, for a number of years.
