John's Story.
Birkenhead News 03 November 1917KILLED ON HIS BIRTHDAY.
A fortnight ago Mr. and Mrs. Brighouse, 4, Westbourne Road, West Kirby, received a letter from a soldier sympathising with them on the fact that their eldest son, John, had been wounded and missing since the 9th October. Naturally, their anxiety was very great, and inquiries were made in the hope of obtaining official intelligence of his whereabouts. Unfortunately they received information last Friday morning that he had been killed in action. The official notification was accompanied by the King’s and Queen’s letter of sympathy. Deceased, who was a Private in the 8th Lancashire Fusiliers, had been in the Army a little over 12 months, and had been in France since February. He was 20 years of age on the day of his death.
His younger brother, Tom, an employee of Messrs. Hinson, Birkenhead, and who is a prominent West Kirby footballer, joined up last week, though he had not received his calling up papers.
