Frederick George's Story.
Born Crewe, August 22, 1896. Son of John and Edith Jackson Woodhouse of Corporation Farm, 560, West Street, Crewe. Attended West Street Mixed and Crewe Secondary and Berkhamstead Schools. In 1913, he entered Manchester University as a Cheshire County Council Scholar to study mechanical engineering. At 6’ 3” in height, he was a keen cricketer and footballer. Frederick was a member of the University Officer Training Corp from October 1914 to February 1915 when he was gazetted to 10th Battalion South Lancashire Regiment and went to France on April 19, 1916. A letter written by a friend, Private Usher, explains, in part, how Frederick met his death '. . . if ever a man deserved the VC, it was Mr. Woodhouse, as he was out all day attending to our wounded, bringing them in, carrying them and dragging them by their feet. He must have saved 30 lives.' A fellow officer wrote that he was 'a most capable officer and self-sacrificing, loved by his men and a great favourite with all. He did his duty nobly and his courage and devotion will always be a pattern to us all.'
