Death of Private Reuben Ruffler

Mr. William Ruffler, of 28, Mersey Road, Rock Ferry, has received the sad news of the death in action of his son, Private Reuben J. Ruffler of the 9th Cheshire Regt. Pte Ruffler was very well known and respected in the South End of the borough, and the utmost sympathy will no doubt be conveyed to his father in the loss he has sustained. He youngest and fifth son, Pte. R. E Ruffler, is with the Garrison Battalion at present in Egypt.

The following letter has been received from the chaplain, the Rev. J. Tobias :- “ Dear Sir – I expect by this time you have heard the sad news of the death of your son, Private R. Ruffler, 9th Cheshires, who was killed in the recent severe fighting. As Church of England chaplain in charge of his battalion, may I assure you of my sincerest sympathy with you in your great sorrow. There is something comforting about the death of a gallant soldier upon the field of battle. He has followed in his Master’s footsteps and has made the great sacrifice. May God comfort you in your trouble, and grant you at the last to meet your loved one in that blessed land where there shall be no parting, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.”

Previous to the war Pte. Ruffler was employed at Messrs. Price’s Candle Co, Bromborough Pool. He was 31 years of age.
