Birkenhead News 01 March 1919BEBINGTON POSTMAN’S DEATH IN FRANCE.
News has come through that Sapper Geo. Marsh, a well-known postman and footballer, has succumbed to pneumonia following influenza at the Canadian General Hospital, Boulogne, France. Three weeks ago he was at home on leave, and had just returned when he became a victim to the deadly scourge. Prior to joining the postal section of the R.E. he was postman at Bebington, and was well-known as an enthusiastic footballer, being connected with Bebington St. Andrew’s and also the postal team in the Thursday League when both the clubs were at their best. In the early part of 1915 he was promoted from postman to a clerkship at Chester, but he only held this position three days when he enlisted in the R.E. He was quickly drafted to the seat of war, and had been right through it. His death occurred on Feb. 8th. He leaves a wife and three children to mourn his loss, to whom the greatest sympathy will go in their great bereavement from a huge circle of friends. A memorial service to the deceased sapper was held at the village church, Bromborough Pool, on Sunday, Feb. 16th, conducted by the Rev. Mr. Marshall, at which many friends and relatives attended.
A brother of the late soldier has won the M.M. for distinguished service with the postal section of the R.E.
