Birkenhead News 29 January 1916

Two Brothers.

One Sees the Other Killed.

SOUTH END MEN IN ACTION.

A large number of people in the South End of the town, and especially in Port Sunlight, will regret to hear of the death in action of Lance-Corporal Joseph Lee, of the 13th Cheshire Regiment, and who resided at 6, Circular Drive, Port Sunlight. Lance-Corporal Lee joined the forces shortly after the outbreak of war, and was drafted out to France in September of last year. He had been home on leave, and had only been back in the trenches nine days when he was killed. Hi brother, Private E. Lee, who was a member of the same regiment, has just returned from France, and says that his brother, together with four other men, went into the underground cellar of a house for some military purpose, and no sooner had they got there than a shell struck the dwelling, which blew up instantly, killing the five men in the cellar. Lance-Corporal Lee was a long service member of Messrs. Lever Bros., he having been employed there for 23 years, and he was a native of Rock Ferry. He leaves a widow and one child. Private E. Lee is also residing at Port Sunlight, and will no doubt return to the scene of action again before too long.
