Birkenhead News  26 August 1916

Highlander Killed in Action.

“A Splendid Record.”

Official news has been received by Mr. and Mrs. Martin, of 221, Conway Street, Birkenhead, that their fourth son, Bandsman G. Martin, has been killed in action. He was a regular soldier having enlisted in the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders some time previous to the outbreak of war. Bandsman Martin was employed as an engineer at Liverpool University. He has two brothers in the Army.

Mrs. Martin has received from an officer of her late son’s company a letter couched in sympathetic terms. He writes :- “It is with deep regret I have to communicate to you the death of your son, Bandsman G. Martin, who was killed in action on the night of the 13th of this month. He had a splendid record of service, and during the two years he had served in this country his work had gained for him an enviable reputation with all. His work as a stretcher bearer was often both arduous and dangerous, but I never knew him shrink from his duty, and he did it all so cheerfully and so well that he set an example to us all, and cheered all who came into contact with him…… I know and feel you have suffered an irreparable loss, and all the officers and men join in offering our most sincere and heartfelt sympathy.”
