James Harold's Story.
James Harold Asher was born in Snierton, Nottingham, in 1889, the son of Henry and Winifred Asher. His father was born in Snierton, Nottingham, in 1858, and his mother was born in Iselton, Nottingham, in 1861. They had 9 children by 1901: Archibald Asher (born in 1880); Ethel G. Asher (born in 1882); Harry Asher (born in 1884); Hilda Asher (born in 1886); Florrie Asher (born in 1894); Phyllis Asher (born in 1896); Ernest Asher (born in 1898); and Fred Asher (born in 1900). By 1911, James Harry (Harold) Asher was employed as a Stoker, and was a boarder at 5, Snow Hill, 2, Washington Street, Nottingham.
In late 1914/early 1915, James Harold Asher enlisted into the 16th Bn Cheshire Regiment, and was sent to France with his battalion in January 1916. Private Asher was killed by shell-fire with 21445 Corporal Tull (“Y” Company), and 21845 Lance Corporal Hickman (“Y” Company), after their brigade artillery had shelled German positions. The German artillery retalliated and caused the deaths of these three men. Private Asher was buried in Plot 1, Rowe E, Grave 23, Rue-des-Berleaux Military Cemetery, Richobourg-L’Avoge, France.
His medal entitlement was Memorial Plaque, British War Medal, and Victory Medal.
