Robert Clarke was born in Knutsford in 1891, the son of Mary Jane Clarke (A dressmaker) of 4, Swinton Square, Knutsford. On leaving school Robert became a hamper-maker.

His service record no longer exists but we know he joined the army at Altrincham and became Private S/18841 of the Seaforth Highlanders.

He later transferred to the 13th Company of the Labour Corp.
