Birkenhead News  16 October 1915

Corporation Employee Dies of Wounds.

Welsh Fusiliers in Action.

News has been received by Mrs. Jones, of 9, Hind Street, Birkenhead, that her son, Private John Jones, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, died of wounds at the No. 1 Casualty Clearing Station on 27th September, 1915. He was only 18 years of age, and volunteered for service the day the war broke out. He was transferred to the firing line in June, where he had been in one or two very stiff engagements. His descriptions of the battles in letters to his mother were written in a very cheerful strain. Private John Jones was born in Birkenhead, and was educated at St. Mary’s School, afterwards being employed by the Health Department of the Birkenhead Corporation. He was a zealous member of the Shaftesbury Boys’ Club, and will be sincerely mourned by all those at Jackson Street.
