Anthony's Story.

2795 Private Anthony Frain, of the 4th Battalion Cheshire Regiment, died on 3rd April 1902 of meningitis in the military hospital, Burgersdorp. His age, shown on his burial record, was 26 but it is more likely that he was 27 years old.

Anthony Frain was born on 28th August 1874 at Ballaghadereen, County Mayo, Ireland. He was the son of Anthony Frain and Bridget Forkan, and brother to Michael and Bridget. When he was 19 years and one month old, he enlisted into the army on 28th September 1893. His regiment - 4th Battalion Cheshire Regiment - was sent to South Africa in the spring of 1900. His medal lists shows that he was awarded the QSA with clasps for Cape Colony and Orange Free State.

Anthony died of meningitis on 3rd April 1902 after an illness of nineteen days. He was buried in Burghersdorp Cemetery.

His Record of Deceased Soldier's Effects shows his place of birth and his father's name.

Anthony Frain is commemorated on a plaque inside St Michael and All Angels Church, Macclesfield, as well as on the memorial in Chester Cathedral.
