Alfred Lawrence's Story.
Birkenhead News 19 October 1918ROCK FERRY MASON BEREAVED.
Sincere sympathy will be felt by all who knows him for Mr. Joseph Jones, 28, Buxton Road, Rock Ferry, in the sad news he has received of the death from wounds of his third son, CQM. Sergt. Jones, Cheshire Regiment, which occurred in France, on October 9th. CQMS Jones an old Territorial of the Cheshire Regt., was mobilised on August 4th, 1914, and sailed with his regiment in July, 1915. He was at the Suvla Bay landing, being promoted to CQMS and was away until July of this year, when his regiment was moved to France. After 14 days leave he rejoined on the 30th July, became attached to the 2nd Army, and was in all the recent heavy fighting. He was wounded on the 8th October, and died the following day, after an operation for gunshot wound in the stomach, and fractured left thigh and leg.
He was connected with the Rock Ferry Presbyterian Church, a teacher in the Sunday school, and was most highly esteemed in the Rock Ferry district. Mr. Jones, who is a member of the Prince of Wales Lodge of Freemasons, has a son on service with the Signal Section, R.E., in German East Africa, while another son, one of the old contemptibles, has been discharged from the Army.
