Ronald's Story.
Sapper Ronald Rigby died in a road accident in the UK whilst home on a month's leave. The car in which he was a passenger plunged in to the River Weaver and only those in the front of the car were able to escape - his brother-in-law and his father. Three people were killed, including his stepsister Florence.
Ronald was born on 23rd September 1918, the son of Arthur Patrick Rigby and Hannah nee Vickers, who lived in Winsford at 6, School Rd, Meadow Bank. The newspaper report described him as one of Montgomery's Desert Rats. He was engaged to Miss Nancy Jackson.
It is likely that the name R. Rigby which appears on the north face of the war memorial in Alsager refers to Ronald, but so far his connection to Alsager has not been established.
