Charles Albert's Story.
C.W.G.C. remember a Charles Albert Moss, Pte., 1st Bn. Cheshire Reg’t. No 8658, at the Le Touret Memorial, France, (Panel 13). He died on the 22nd Oct. 1914 aged 22. Son of Charles Albert and Betsy Moss of 27 Romanes St. Castle Park, Northwich.
The Cheshire Regiment book Soldiers Died in the Great War 1914-19, records a Charles Albert Moss, b. Marston Nortwich (Northwich) Cheshire, e. (enlisted) Hartford Cheshire, 8658, Pte., k. in a. F&F 22/10/14.
N.A.M.C. have a card for a Charles Moss, Pte., with the Cheshire Regiment, Service No 8658. Awarded the 14 Star, British and Victory medals, Theatre of Ward not recorded but must be France with a Date of Entry 11-9-14. It is recorded on the card he was K. in A. 22-10-14.
Cheshirebmd records the birth of a Charles A. Moss in 1892, Weaverham, which works in with his age of 22 in 1914 when he died. The 1911 census as the Moss family living at 18 Hooker Street, Castle, Northwich. Head of the family is Charles Albert Moss aged 45, Cooper at the Chemical Manufactures, born Northwich; Betsy wife aged 46, having had 9 children, 4 boys and 5 girls, in 24 years of marriage, all surviving and all at home including Charles Albert aged 18, General Labourer, born N/wich. The 3 other sons would all be of an age to have enlisted. John William, a Cooper like father aged 23, James, House Painter, aged 21 and Samuel, Tin Smith, aged 17.
The Brunner Mond & Co., Roll of Honour records a Charles Albert Moss, Pte., at the Lostock Works, with the 1st Cheshire, Presumed Dead. Charles is remembered on the Lostock Works memorial.
There are Service Documents available for Charles, his Attestation Sheet records a Charles A. Moss with the 5th Bn. Cheshire Reg’t., Service No 1179. His age 17 years 8 months, born Marston, Northwich. He lived at 18 Hooker Street, Northwich and worked for Brunner Mond. The form was date was 22nd March 1910. Another sheet records a Service No 8658, His period at Home was from 29/6/10 to the 10/9/14, 4yrs 74dys. Charles was posted to France on the 11/9/14 with an end date of 22/10/14 just 42 days, Charles had been K.i.A.
