WOUNDED ON SENTRY DUTY
HOUGH SOLDIERS EXPERIENCE
Private Alfred Galley. A Company 9th Cheshire Regiment, only son of Mr. Thomas Galley, Newcastle Road, Hough, was wounded in France October 4th. While on sentry duty a shrapnel shell burst near him a bullet from which passed through his left arm, an inch above the elbow, and travelled across his breast pocket cutting in two a lead pencil, which apparently deflected the bullet and prevented further injury. After treatment at a French hospital, he was removed to the Military Hospital at Fulham.
Private Galley previous to enlistment in September 1914 was a clerk in the Goods Sheds, Crewe. He is eighteen years of age.
Alfred was discharged from the Army 12th May 1916.
