Cyril George's Story.
Died 29th November 1940 aged 25, fighting fires following a bombing raid. Incendiaries had hit a number of premises and he was killed by a collapsing wall on Foregate Street, Chester. He was in fact the first casualty of the war in Chester.
Son of George and Anne Dutton of St Anne Street, Chester, 12 months prior to his death, he married Florence Dutton, the sister of Charlie Leyfield the well-known footballer.
He was educated at Victoria School and before the war was on the staff of Messrs Bradleys, Gents Outfitters. He volunteered for the army, becoming a Lance Corporal in the Royal Army Service Corps, but re-joined the Auxiliary Fire Service. According to his cousin, he only joined the AFS because all his friends were firemen.
He is buried at Overleigh Cemetery, Chester, and had been made a Freeman of Chester on 29th October 1938 by birth – profession shown as Clerk.
