Death of an Old “Contemptible.”
Lance Corporal Albert Oakes.
After a lingering illness Lance Corporal Oakes, Cheshire Regiment, died on Tuesday last week at his home, Wybunbury Lane, Nantwich, at the age of 31 years. Lance Corporal Oakes was in the regular Army and was one of the old “Contemptibles.” After having undergone a good deal of heavy fighting he was invalided home, and subsequently received his discharge. For a time, his health improved, and he was able to follow his profession as a chemist’s assistant, but unfortunately there was a recurrence of the illness, to which he eventually succumbed. He died in the same room in which he was born.

Albert’s medal index card shows he arrived in France 16 August 1914 with the 1st battalion Cheshire Regiment, and he was medically discharged 30 September 1914.
