“Laird’s Apprentice Killed.”

Sad Birthday Anniversary.

Official intimation is to hand of the death in action of Private C. W. Meacock, of the 4th Battalion Worcestershire Regt. He was well-known to his friends and former schoolmates as Charlie Dutton, he being the adopted son of Mr. and Mrs. Dutton, of 8, Walker Place, Higher Tranmere. Private Meacock enlisted in the 4th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment before the outbreak of war, and was on garrison duty at Devonport until October, 1915, when he was transported to the Dardanelles. He was well-known locally, and before enlisting was employed at Messrs. Cammell Laird and Co., Ltd., as an apprentice rivetter. A sad coincidence connected with the death of this young soldier is that his foster parents received the news on December 29th, the 19th anniversary of his birthday.
