Robert Owen's Story.

Birkenhead News  10th April 1915

BIRKENHEAD “TERRIER” KILLED.

Well-known Footballer.

It is with much regret that we announce the death of Pte. Robert Owen Jones, second son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Jones, of 88, Bentick Street. He was only 18 years of age and enlisted in the 4th Cheshire Regt. on the outbreak of hostilities. He made rapid progress and early in January he was transferred to the 5th Cheshires, leaving for the front with his new battalion on February 14th. He took part in some very heavy fighting, notably at Neuve Chappelle, during which battle he was killed on March 24th. It was not until Thursday, however, that the official intimation of his death was received, an unconfirmed report which was circulated early in the week caused much unnecessary pain to the relatives. Pte. Jones was well-known in local football circles, being a prominent member of the Prenton Ath. F.C. He was formerly employed at the River Plate Meat Stores, Grange Road, and will be greatly missed by his numerous friends.
