Son of John and Eliza West, of The Lodge, Holly Rd., Wilmslow, Cheshire; husband of Mary West, of Pexhill, Henbury, Macclesfield.
WW1 SERVICE
The death of Sergeant West was reported in the Macclesfield Times on 3 September 1915:
SERGEANT WILLIAM WEST - On Tuesday Mrs West, Pexhill, Henbury, received news that her husband, Sergeant William West, 1/7th Cheshire regiment, died on August 22nd from wounds sustained while fighting in the Dardanelles. Sergeant West, who was 24 years of age, was attached to the Wilmslow detachment. He was formerly in the Volunteers and joined the Territorial Force at its inauguration. He was married only four months ago. Sergeant West has several brothers serving in the Army.
COMMEMORATION
Sgt William West is buried in grave ref. I. C. 4. in Hill 10 Cemetery in Turkey. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission holds casualty details for Sgt William West, and he is listed on the Imperial War Museum’s Lives of the First World War website.
Locally, Sgt William West is commemorated on the Wilmslow (Mill Street) war memorial, and the Henbury and Broken Cross war memorial at St Thomas Church, Henbury.
