Driver Tom Jones
Killed by a Shell
Driver Tom Jones, Royal Field Artillery, was killed by a shell in a dug-out on Dec. 31, 1916. He was the son of Mr. Lewis and the late Ellen Jones of 31, Gladstone Street, Birkenhead, and was in his 20th year. Previous to joining the Forces he was an apprentice carpenter with Messrs. Cammell Laird and Co. In letters received by his father from the chaplain, Mr Anderson, the officers and men, it is shown that he died a noble death doing his duty. They speak of his cheerfulness and willingness to do what he could. He was the nephew of Mrs. Adams, 2, Claughton Drive, Poulton, and will be missed by a large circle of friends. His elder brother, Maurice is lying seriously wounded in hospital in Glasgow, having undergone seven operations.
Note: Whilst the article states Thomas Jones was in the Royal Field Artillery, he was in fact in the Royal Garrison Artillery.
