Tramways Employee Killed in Action.
Mrs. Woodcock, of 28, Vulcan Street, has received official War Office intimation of the death in action of her son, Private John William Woodcock, of the 1/4th Cheshires. The deceased who has been posted as missing since August last, took part in the famous landing at Suvla Bay during the Dardanelles campaign and at the time of his death was out sniping. He was a very keen shot, and received special pay in recognition, joining the original battalion of the 4th Cheshires at the outbreak of war, then being only 17 years of age. Before the war he was employed by the Corporation Tramways Department, and in his leisure time was a keen member of the Prenton Juniors F.C. He was educated at St. James’ School, and many of his old school associates, both teachers and fellow school chums, will mourn his death.
