Birkenhead News 05 December 1914Rifleman Falls in Battle.
EX-DOCK BOARD EMPLOYEE.
We regret to announce the death of Private J. H. Halligan, who was killed in action near Neuve, France, on October 27th.
Private Halligan was 31 years of age, and the eldest son of Mr. And Mrs. Joseph Halligan, of 74, Park Road North, Birkenhead. He had served with the Royal Irish Rifles since he was 19, and went with his regiment to India, when it was drafted out there. He returned about two years ago, and was placed on reserve. During this time he was employed by the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board.
He rejoined his regiment on the outbreak of war, and was sent to the front with some of the first regiments of the British Expeditionary Force. He took part in the battle of Mons, and in one of his letters said that they had been fighting hard for some time, but were retiring.
