John's Story.

Second Lieutenant John Smethurst, the Kings Liverpool Regiment, who was killed in action on September 16, at the age of twenty-five, was the elder son of the late John Smethurst of Wigan, he was educated at Rugby. He was well known member of the Oxton Cricket Club, being one of the mainstays of the team, and had been secretary of the club for the past few seasons; he was a fine all-round sportsman, and a member of the Wallasey Golf Club. On the outbreak of war, he joined the Kings Liverpool Regiment as a private, subsequently being promoted to quartermaster-sergeant, and later granted a commission.
