Mr. and Mrs Parkes, of 23 Copyhold Weaverham have received notification of the death of their son, Private J. W. Powell of the Cheshire Regiment. Mrs Parkes has been twice married and the deceased soldier was her only son by her first husband. He was 27 years of age and was well known in the district. Private Powell enlisted on November 5th 1915 and went on foreign service on June 1st last. When he joined the Colours he was in the employ of Mr. Woodall farmer of Ringway near Altrincham and prior to that he worked at the Winnington works of Messrs Brunner Mond and Co., and whilst there lodged with his aunt, Mrs Powell of Lydyett Lane, Barton. Just before he went on active service he was married to a young lady whose home is at Stanton near Shrewsbury. She is now living with her parents and learned of her husbands death from wounds in a letter from his company officer who wrote as follows:-You have no doubt heard from the hospital authorities the sad news of your husband’s death. We were on our way up to the trenches when a shell burst in the middle of the platoon wounding your husband very badly. He was taken at once to a dressing station. Please accept my deepest sympathy. He was a good hard working fellow and will be greatly missed in the platoon. I feel you will be proud to think what a glorious death he has died, doing his duty to the very last. As a boy Private Powell was a chorister at Weaverham Church and was also a Sunday school scholar. On leaving the district for Altrincham he joined the church choir at Hale Barns and continued as a member until he joined the Army. Private Powell was greatly respected by all who knew him and his widow and also his step father and mother have received numerous messages of condolences.
