John Edward's Story.
C.W.G.C remember a J. E. Wilding Pte., Service No 16925, with the 10th Bn. Lancashire Fusiliers, died on the 25th Aug. 1918. Remembered at Adanac Military Cemetery Miraumont (Vll.C.6.) France. No family details.
From the article below and the birth of a new baby in 1918 we find that Freebmd records the birth of a Hilda Wilding in the Sept. Q of 1918, with the mothers name of Roberts. Cheshirebmd records the marriage of a John E. Wilding/Jane Roberts in 1901 at St. Mary’s Great Budworth. The marriage certificate dated the 5th May 1901 confirms that John Edward Wilding married Jane Roberts, both residing at Castle.
Cheshirebmd records the birth of a John Edward Wilding in 1880 Northwich which works in with John’s age of 37 when he died in 1918. The 1911 census records the large family at 21 Chapel Street, Castle, with John Edward Wilding head of the family aged 30, Labourer at the Gas Works; Jane, wife also 30; followed by grandmother Sophie Wilding and 6 children.
N.A.M.C. records a medal card for a John Edward Wilding, Pte., with the Lancashire Fusiliers, service No 16925. Awarded the British and Victory Medals, T.o.W and the D.o.E. not addressed. It is not recorded that he had died.
Northwich Guardian 20th September 1918 LANCE CORPORAL J. E. WILDING
Mrs Wilding of 74 Warrington Road, Northwich, was official notified from the war office on Wednesday that her husband, Lance-Corporal John Edward Wilding, of the Lancashire Fusiliers had been killed in action on August 25th He was 37 years of age and leaves a widow and eight children, the youngest being only six weeks old. He is the second son of Mr. Philip Wilding of Barton Place.
As a young man he was a bugler in the Old Hartford Volunteers and enlisted in the Lancashire Fusiliers in 1915. After about nine months service at the front he was sent back to work on munitions at Messrs Brunner, Mond and Co’s where he was previously employed but was recalled to the Colours during the second week in April and went on active service again on June 20th. He was a member of Mr. J. C. Weston’s Bible Class at Castle.
Brunner Mond & Co., Roll of Honour booklet records three Wilding lads in the Winnington Works section, including a John Edward Wilding Pte. With the 10th Lancashire Fusiliers who was killed in action.
