Thomas Blackshaw's Story.
Thomas Blackshaw Mather was born in Stockport in 1892, the youngest son of Richard Mather, landlord of the Commercial Hotel there, and his wife Alice Jane. Following the death of his father in 1895 he was brought up by his mother and her second husband; a Sergeant Major (Retired) John Rawlinson, of Shaw Heath, Stockport. In 1911 the family were living at 150 Shaw Heath Stockport described as Bank clerk
He worked for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co, (now part of RBS) but during the First World War left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in the 9th Battalion Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment)-number 4254. He was killed in action in Armentières, France on 24 August 1916. He was 24 years old.
He has no known grave and is remembered on the Ploegsteert Memorial. He is also remembered on the Stockport Memorial, in St Thomas Church Stockport and St Thomas Sunday School.
