Frederick James's Story.

James Frederick Keens was born in Knutsford in 1896, one of three children born to John Frederick (a domestic gardener) and Margurite Alice Keens of 11, Stanley Road, Knutsford.  James was a Grocery assistant. The family later moved to 7, Freeholders Terrace, Stanley Road, Knutsford. James belonged to the Methodist Church in Knutsford where he went to Sunday School and was a member of the choir.

His service record no longer exists but we know he enlisted in 1914, becoming Private no. 25236 in the 1st Battalion of the Cheshire Regiment.

Frederic died of wounds on the 17th May 1915.

In addition to the memorial, His friends also put up a metal plaque that is situated just inside the door to the Methodist Church.

Researched and compiled by Tony Davies.
