George's Story.
George had been born in Hazel Grove, the son of William and Annie, 11 Neville Street. He enlisted at Chester. He was first posted to the Training Reserve TR/4/52245. The troops were reallocated to other units and George probably went to the 1/4th when it returned from Egypt in July 1918. He was killed in action 14 October 1918, After the battle, his body was never recovered and identified, and he is commemorated on the Memorial to the Missing at Zonnebeke. He may have died not knowing that his older brother, Henry, had been killed, on 19 September, whilst serving with Kings Shropshire Light Infantry. A third brother Joseph was discharged due to being longer fit for service in 1917.
