John's Story.
Another member of the Royal Artillery branch of the old Territorial Army has been killed in France. Bdr. John Westhead was for four years before war broke out in the local ‘Terriers,’ and went to France with the Siege Battery guns. He was an old Riverside School boy and worked for Mr. Nolan (who has also been killed) as a window cleaner. He lived at 9, Thomas Buildings, Seacombe, and was a fine young fellow, standing 6ft. 2in. His mother now resides at 71 Binns Road, Old Swan, and his aunt, Miss Sarah Westhead, lives at No. Shaw Street, Seacombe. Lieut. Silver, in a letter to Mrs. Westhead says: - “It is with deep sorrow that I wish to tell you of the death in action of your son, Bdr. Westhead. He was hit on the head last night by a piece of shell and died a few minutes afterwards. He felt no pain, as he was at once rendered unconscious. I, his section leader, feel his loss deeply as do all his men. He was a good lad; one that an officer could trust to do his duty. My heart goes out to you in your deep loss. He was laid to rest this morning in a grave of his own near the lines, a clergyman was present – in fact the Rev. Mellish, V.C held the service. Please accept our deepest sympathy.”
