George Henry's Story.
George Henry Walls was born in Birkenhead in 1886 to father Patrick, a coachsmith, and mother Elizabeth.In 1901 George living at 225 St. Anne Street, Birkenhead with his parents and two brothers and three sisters. He was educated at Our Lady’s Roman Catholic School.
George’s father Patrick died in 1910 and by 1911 the family had moved to 454, Price Street, Birkenhead.
Prior to joining the Army in the First World War he was employed by Thomas Nevanas Ltd., shipping butchers.
Private George Henry Walls joined the 4th Battalion of the Cheshire Regiment on the 22nd October 1914. He was drafted out to France along with his battalion on 30th August 1916. Shortly after arriving in France was posted to the 13th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment.
In January of 1917 he received the Military Medal “for gallant conduct and devotion to duty.” However, in August 1917 was shot through the chest and arm, and died later in hospital of wounds received on August 10th. This was his third time wounded including being gassed. His mother, back home in Birkenhead, received a later from her son’s chaplain and his nurse confirming his death. Mrs. Walls had another son serving in the Navy and one in the Merchant Service, and a son-in-law serving with the forces in Salonika.
Private George Henry Walls is buried in Brandhoek New Military Cemetery in Belgium.
