Thomas Harold's Story.

New Ferry Soldier Falls.
On May 12th, whilst on sentry duty, Private Thomas Harold Golding, of the South Lancashire Regiment, was mortally wounded. Private Golding was only 21 years of age, and was the third son of Mr. and Mrs. Golding, of 4, Brownlow Road, New Ferry. Before joining a battalion of the South Lancashires, Private Golding was a very highly-esteemed employee of Messrs. Price, Bromborough Pool. He was also a popular and clever footballer, having played for St. Mark’s, New Ferry, A.F.C. for a number of seasons, and he was a regular member of the Bible Class connected with the church, where his loss will be deeply felt.
The sad news of his fall in action was conveyed to the sorrowing parents by means of a very touching letter from Lieut. W. H. Kember, acting officer commanding the company, in which he says :- “It was just noon, and your son Tom was on sentry duty at the end of a communication trench, when the enemy started bombarding, one of the shells bursting a few yards away, and we can only presume it was some shrapnel from that shell that caused the wound, for we were unable to find any trace of the piece. He will be buried with full military honours in a cemetery behind the lines this evening. It is such men as your son who are ready and willing to die for their country that has made Britain what she is.”
