James's Story.
James Foster was born on Tabley, Cheshire in 1896, one of four children born to George (a teamsman on a farm) and Elizabeth (a laundress) of 41, Cross Town, Knutsford. On leaving school James became a telegraph boy.
He enlisted in the army and became Private no. 14238 in the 10th Battalion of the Cheshire Regiment, and went to France on the 27th September 1915.
James was killed in action on the 3rd May 1916.
On that fateful day:
The war diary states:
˜3.5.16
Things very quiet during the day. Our snipers did some very useful work accounting for several of the enemy who exposed themselves whilst working on or near new water in front of our right sector. A mine was exploded on our right at 8pm - there was considerable machine gun activity afterwards but little artillery fire. Rifle grenades were freely used during the night by the enemy and some casualties were caused by these."
