Samuel's Story.

Last week we reported that Company-Sergeant-Major Samuel Trueman of the Cheshires of Union Street, Sandbach, was seriously ill, suffering from gunshot wounds, received whilst in action. We now regret to record his death, the official news coming to hand on Monday. It appears that he died on April 7th, as the official notice says, in action. Mrs. Trueman, who at present lives at Wheelock with her four-months-old child. received sympathetic letter from the King on Monday evening.

Sergeant-Major Trueman enlisted almost 13 years ago. He spent ten years in India. He was a fine, robust soldier, and was one of the smartest men in the Army. Twelve months ago he was called to England to act as an instructor at Codford Camp, Wiltshire. On November 5th he set sail with his regiment for some unknown destination. Before embarking, the officers and men of the regiment presented him with a marble clock and stand as a token of their esteem. Whilst in India he was a prominent footballer and hockey player, and captured many medals and cups. (Newspaper report 21st April 1916)

Samuel was the son of Samuel and Mary Ellen Trueman, born in 1884 believed to have been residing at 55, Union Street in Sandbach. He had an older brother Dan, who also lost his life in the Great War.

Samuel was employed as a general labourer when he enlisted into the Cheshire Regiment on the 7th September at the age of 19 years and three months. He joined the 2nd Battalion, Cheshire Regiment, on 9th November 1903.

Even though Samuel was reprimanded on several occasions while he was based in Aldershot, by September 1904 he had moved up the ranks to a Lance Corporal. He was then promoted to Corporal on the 1st September 1907.

He was stationed in Aldershot until September 1904 then posted to India. We know that he received his anti-typhoid inoculation, and was in Madras in August 1907.

He was reprimanded yet again while serving in Madras.

He married Florence May Morgan on 19th August 19th 1912, we can only assume he was home on leave even though we have no record of this.
