Ernest's Story.
Birkenhead News 27 October 1915Hoylake Soldier’s Death.
SUPPORT OF A WIDOWED MOTHER.
We regret to record that Driver Ernest Smith, attached to the 21st Division Cheshire Field Company R.E. (53rd Welsh Division) died of dysentery on October 12th in hospital at Alexandria. He joined the Engineers in January last, and was drafted to the Dardanelles on July 16th or thereabouts. Information was received from a nurse in the hospital telling his mother of his serious illness, and two days afterwards Mrs. Smith received news from the War Office of her son’s death. Before enlistment the deceased soldier was in the employ of Mr. George Baxter, butcher, of Hoylake, and was well liked by all who knew him. He will be sadly missed by his widowed mother, who resides at 2, School Lane, Hoylake, for he was, with a younger brother, the sole support of his mother and her little ones. Mrs. Smith lost her husband in March, 1914.
