Walter Henry's Story.
Educated at Stonyhurst School from 1907 to Apr 1910 and Shrewsbury School from 1912 to 1915
Gentleman Cadet, RMC, Sandhurst in Sept 1914
Gazetted 2nd Lieut., 16th Battery, 3rd East Lancashire Brigade, RFA (TF) on 3 Aug 15
Served in France and Flanders from 4 Feb 16 to 5 Apr 18
From 22 Aug 16 to 23 Jul 17 he was employed with Trench Mortar Batteries
Twice Mentioned in Despatches in the London Gazette of 18 May 17 and 26 Sep 17
Awarded the Military Cross in the London Gazette of 26 Sep 17 (citation on 9 Jan 18) “for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when his battery was under heavy hostile shell fire. Extensive fires having been caused by the bombardment amongst gun pits, ammunition dumps and camouflage, he organised a party and extinguished the fires, thereby saving four guns from being put out of action and a large amount of ammunition from being destroyed. He set a splendid example of personal courage and initiative.”
At the time of his death he was serving with A Battery, 110th Brigade, RFA (TF)
On 5 April 1918 he died of wounds recieved in action at Hebuterne on 5th April 1918 at the 5th Canadian Hospital at Doullens
