Two South-End Patriots.
One Killed.
News has reached Mrs. Woodhouse, of 17, Wellesley Street, Birkenhead, that her brother-in-law, Lance-Corporal H. Scheers, has been killed in action. The following letter from the deceased soldier’s superior officer conveys the sad intelligence :- “I beg to inform you that Lance Corporal Harry Scheers was killed in action on the night of the 14th, being shot through the head whilst being in the trenches. Permit me to offer our condolences in your bereavement. We all loved him for his cheerfulness. We mourn his loss, and tender our sympathies to you in your bereavement. He was a good soldier, and died for his King and country.”
On the outbreak of war Lance-Corporal Scheers, together with his brother, a private, enlisted in the 13th Battalion, Cheshire Regt., and had been at the front for some months. He was employed by Messrs. Lever Bros. for a number of years, and had many friends in the South End, by whom his death will be deplored. He was a widower and leaves one child.
