Samuel's Story.
Samuel Rustage Private 36592 was born in Tabley Cheshire and was raised by his Grand Parents. His next of kin was given as his fiancée, Susan Belsham of Willington, Nr Knutsford, Cheshire. Samuel was a horseman on a local farm. He was believed to have a Stepbrother.
He Enlisted in the Army on the 27th July 1916 at Altrincham and joined the 10th Battalion of the Cheshire Regiment. He suffered a gunshot wound to his right hand on 3rd September 1916 and returned to duties on 11th September 1916.
The 10th Battalion was part of the 7th Brigade, 25th Division and Samuel was killed during the attack on the Stuff Redoubt during the Battle of Ancre Heights near to Thiepval and the Schwarben Redoubt. The Germans counter attacked twice up and alongside Stump Road. Due to a break-down in communications artillery fire brought to bear on the Enemy also fell on the Cheshire’s who were holding advanced barricades. During the Action 2nd Lieutenant W. Hunter was killed, 8 Officers wounded, 137 N.C.Os. and men killed, wounded or missing.
The Official Regimental history records:
"10th October........... it was a treat to see men coming back with a grin from ear to ear, with German helmets and souvenirs hanging all over them. The Worcester 1st Battalion gave the 10th Battalion a rousing cheer as it passed on its way back to rest.”
Samuel was killed on 10th October 1916; he was 36 years old. All efforts to trace his next of kin by the Army failed. His cousin Joseph Rustage is also commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
