Wright's Story.

Stalybridge Footballer.

Former United Player Dies of wounds in France.

The war has claimed another popular Stalybridge solider, Corporal Writh Robinson, Trench Mortar Battery, of 54 Warrington Street, Stalybridge. News was received on Sunday morning by Mr. and Mrs. T. Robinson, his parents,  that he had deid from wounds in the Casualty Clearing Station, France. The letter was from the Rev. James J. Pryde, chaplain, and stated that Corporal Robinson was brought in badly wounded, and though everything possible was done for him he passed peacefully away on February 14.
Corporal Robinson was a single man, in his 29th year. He joined the 1st Cheshires in August 1914, and was afterwards attached to the Trench Mortar Battery,  and he had been in France over 18 months. He was exceedingly well known, mainly in football circles. At one time he was connected with the Bennett Street U.M. Football Club, but it was with Stalybridge United that he was most prominent. He was regarded as a very fine full-back and several seasons played with United and was the possessor of several medals he had won in various football competitions.

Corporal Robinson was a member of the Hassall Street Liberal Club, and the flag was hoisted half mast over the institution when news of his death was received. Mr. and Mrs. Robinson have two other sons serving with the forces, namely,  Gunner William Robinson, R.F.A., who has been in France for a long time and was over on furlough last week, and Private James Robinson, who has joined the Liverpool Labour Battalion.

Also, in the same edition there is another small article in the sports section.

Corporal Wright Robinson (28), Cheshire Regiment, who has died of wounds, was for several years captain and right full-back of the Stalybridge United F.C. Prior to the war he also played on many occasions with Stalybridge Celtic.

Wright's Medal Index Card shows that he had served overseas for nearly two years.
