Charles Henry's Story.
Charles was born in Liverpool and his parents, Charles and Fanny, later moved to the Stockport area and lived at 28 Lark Hill Rod, Edgeley. He worked in the offices of T & J Leigh Ltd, cotton spinners, in Stockport. The local press, reporting his death, noted that he had enlisted into the 6th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment in September 1914. His original service number, 2687, supports that date and it is clear that he must have lied about his age to enlist. He probably went overseas in the spring of 1915.He was wounded in the spring of 1916 and returned to the front in the July. This is probably when he was transferred to the 11th Battalion. A little after his death , the local newspaper published an "in memoriam" notice from his "his broken-hearted sweetheart, Alice":-"How little I thought, when we said goodbye, we parted forever and you were to die. Oh, the grief I feel, words cannot tell. For I could not be with you to bid you farewell." A few months later, there would be further bad news for the family. Charles's brother, Herbert, was killed on 7 October whilst serving with the Manchester Regiment.
