Arthur Henry's Story.
Birkenhead News 21 October 1916Well-Known Tranmere Family Bereaved.
Private A. H. Turtle Dies of Wounds.
A few days ago Mr. James Turtle, of 8, Greenway Road, Higher Tranmere, received an intimation that his youngest son, Pte. Arthur H. Turtle, was lying dangerously ill in hospital in France. This announcement was accompanied by an expression of regret that passes for relatives could not be granted. Subsequently Mr. Turtle was the sad recipient of the official notification from the Territorial Force Record Office at Shrewsbury that his son had died of wounds on the 4th inst. in France. As to the particular nature of the wounds and the precise circumstances under which the deceased passed away, Mr. Turtle, unfortunately at the moment possesses no information whatever.
This young soldier, 25 years of age, joined the Army in March last, and after a short training at the Whittington Camp, covering a period of a little more than three months, Private Turtle was sent out with a draft of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, being attached to the 4th Battalion of that regiment.
Well known in the Tranmere district, of an amiable disposition, considerate and conscientious, Arthur Turtle will be missed by many. Prior to enlistment he served in the business of Messrs. James Turtle and sons, bread and provision dealers, and the many customers will hear of his demise with feelings of regret. At home Arthur was a favourite, and his father and his brothers and sisters are deeply grieved by the distressing news; but it will be some measure of comfort to them to know that in their bereavement this old and respected Tranmere family have the sincere sympathy of a wide circle of friends.
