John's Story.
John Walsh was born in Birkenhead on the 23rd December 1892, son of James, a plasterer, and Mary. In 1901 John was living at 61 Beckwith Street, Birkenhead with his parents and three brothers and a sister.By 1911, the family have moved down the road to 89, Beckwith Street. John’s occupation is recorded as a waiter in a cafe but later he was employed as a steward at Prenton Golf Club.
Following the outbreak of the First World War John enlisted in the 6th Battalion of the Royal Irish Regiment in January 1915. He arrived in France with his battalion in May of that year. He was wounded in Ypres in April 1916, and was killed in action near Guillemont, France on 9th September 1916.

Beckwith Street Corporal Killed
News has been received that Corporal John Walsh, of the Royal Irish Regiment. Second son of Mr. and Mrs. James Walsh, of 89 Beckwith Street, Birkenhead was killed in action on September 9th. He was only 23 years of age.
